Every Veterinarian Matters—Dr. Michael Lappin
Morris Animal Foundation appreciates the commitment made by our Golden Retriever Lifetime Study veterinarians, and we want to honor and recognize that commitment by introducing a few of our study veterinarians. This month, meet Dr. Michael Lappin of The Animal House, Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts.
Dr. Michael Lappin learned about the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study back when he was on the board of directors for the Golden Retriever Foundation. He became involved after learning more about the study and witnessing the early progress of the initial pilot program. Through recruiting and encouraging participation, study veterinarian Dr. Lappin now has the largest number of patients in the study – 17 dogs, including his own hero, Isaac.
“It was never a question of my participation,” said Dr. Lappin about the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study. “Just how much could I do to help.”
Dr. Lappin is highly involved in the golden retriever community and has been an instrumental member of both the Golden Retriever Club of America and the Yankee Golden Retriever Club for more than 20 years. Surely, this study would not see the same success it does now without the dedication of professionals like Dr. Lappin.
In fact, dedication has taken on another meaning for him. For two years, Dr. Lappin has organized an annual Golden Retriever Lifetime Study party for his “patients that are heroes, their families, supporters and other heroes and supporters from the Northeast.” With help from participant Heather Donnelly and her hero dog, Shannon, Dr. Lappin recently welcomed almost 50 people and 30 golden retrievers to celebrate the day together on a private beach.
“It was amazing to see 30 golden retrievers running together in play, with no grumbling or animosity toward each other,” said Dr. Lappin. “Not many breeds would allow that interaction.”
It’s the kind-hearted nature of these dogs that drives Dr. Lappin to do so much to advance the health and quality of life for golden retrievers around the world. Thank you, Dr. Lappin, for your commitment to the study. Every veterinarian in the Morris Animal Foundation Golden Retriever Lifetime Study matters!
