“Golden” Leader Nominated for National Veterinary Technician Award
Morris Animal Foundation’s Erin Searfoss has been nominated for the inaugural American Humane Association Hero Veterinary Technician AwardTM, presented by Zoetis. This special award program was established in part to help recognize the people behind keeping our pets healthy.
Erin is the Senior Project Manager for Morris Animal Foundation’s Golden Retriever Lifetime Study. She is a graduate of Bel-Rea Institute of Animal Technology (with honors) and is a U.S. Military Academy (West Point) alumnus. After serving in the U.S. Army as an engineer officer for more than six years and working as a veterinary technician in a small mixed-animal practice in rural Larkspur, Colorado, Erin joined the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study Team in 2011.
Since her addition to the study team, Erin has been instrumental in moving this complex and ground-breaking project forward. She is involved with every aspect of the study and coordinates key players such as scientists, veterinarians, dog owners, and contract and Morris team members. Without her, this study simply would not have advanced to where it is today.
The Golden Retriever Lifetime Study is the largest and longest effort ever undertaken to improve the health of dogs. Over the next 10 to 14 years, observational data collected from 3,000 Golden Retrievers will help Morris Animal Foundation learn how to prevent cancer and other diseases that take the lives of dogs too soon. Erin is passionate about her contribution to this study and has said, “It means being a part of something bigger than me.” She demonstrates the value that veterinarian technicians add to veterinary science, both in and out of the clinic.
Thanks in part to Erin’s hard work, the Foundation has reached a historical milestone, by officially enrolling 1,500 of the 3,000 Golden Retrievers needed for this important study!
“Morris Animal Foundation is proud of Erin and her accomplishments,” said David Haworth, DVM, PhD, President/CEO of Morris Animal Foundation. “Her hard work and dedication to the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study is remarkable and our Foundation is lucky to have her on our team.”
