Fundraising Highlight: The National Specialty

The National Specialty

By Kelly Diehl, DVM, Scientific Writer and Researcher

The 2016 Golden Retriever Club of America National Specialty was held October 2-9 in beautiful Placerville, California. The week-long event is a combination competition, educational program, and social event for the golden retriever community. The event also gives Morris Animal Foundation and our Golden Retriever Lifetime Study team an opportunity to raise critical funds and, most importantly, to meet with some of our golden retriever hero dogs.

The GRCA generously gave us an hour in the main show arena to showcase our Parade of Heroes. The heroes take center stage as, one by one, their dedicated owners parade them out by state, hero number, and name. A poem is recited to remember the dogs that have passed away, and stories about the heroes are shared with the audience. The parade is a remarkable way to honor and celebrate the dogs enrolled in the study. Our study team looks forward to continuing this wonderful tradition at the 2017 National Specialty hosted by the Potomac Valley Golden Retriever Club.

This year we also piloted a special offer to people attending the National Specialty. A specially designed Golden Retriever Lifetime Study baseball cap was offered for a minimum donation of $35 each. Of course the majority of donations were well over $35, because that’s how much these folks care about the study. At the end of the event the donation numbers exceeded $500!
