Every Dog Matters – Hero Dogs #913 and #914
Morris Animal Foundation appreciates the commitment made by our study participants, and we want to honor and recognize that commitment. Each month, we’ll share their stories and learn about the families and veterinarians who care for them. This month, meet Belue and Charlie, Hero Dogs #913 and #914.
As a longtime supporter of Morris Animal Foundation, it was Chris Kinchen herself who informed her veterinarian of the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study. After all, Chris had grown up with dogs, many of which were golden retrievers. Now, she and her family are the proud pet parents of Belue, 5, and Charlie, 4.
Long before these two were around, Chris made the bold decision to have a golden retriever while going to college.
“Looking back, it seems like it may not have been the best idea,” said Chris, “but it worked out well.”
Her dog, Dillon, was so friendly that he spent his days with the maintenance staff at her apartment complex until Chris would return from class to find Dillon waiting for her at the door. From that point on, Chris was in love with the social and fun-loving tendencies of the breed.
Still, she understands the highs and the lows of having one as a pet, and has since grieved the loss of two other golden retrievers; one from a tumor at 11 years old, and another from old age at 12.
Belue and Charlie have carried Chris’s love of golden retrievers within the Kinchen household. In fact, the two of them are best friends.
“They do everything together,” said Chris. “When they go outside, whoever comes in first stands at the door and waits for the other one to come in. Then they get their treat together.”
The dynamic between Belue and Charlie may very well be a product of their birth order. Belue was the last in his litter, and Charlie was the first in his and is very much the big brother. Despite being the alpha, Charlie loves his brother. Although their personalities are vastly different, said Chris, there is no doubt they complement each other perfectly.
Thank you Chris, Belue and Charlie, for your commitment to the study. Every participant in the Morris Animal Foundation Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, human and dog, matters!
