Teamwork Is a Golden Combination: A practice manager, a veterinarian and a breeder work together
When new client and Golden Retriever breeder Sabrina Prim, of Lynn, Indiana, approached the team at nearby Greens Fork Animal Hospital about participating in the Morris Animal Foundation Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, Dr. Sally Osborn was reluctant. Her initial response to her practice manager, Lisa Allen, was, “I don’t think I have the time resources available to take this on.”
Lisa encouraged the veterinarian; however, by promising to do the legwork, which meant taking care of anything that didn’t require a doctor, such as client interviews, inputting data into the study’s online database, scheduling patient rechecks and processing lab specimens.
Four study participants later, Dr. Osborn hasn’t regretted even a minute of her well-spent time. She is a fan of Golden Retrievers and says she admires Sabrina’s proactive role in the program.
“Some breeders are reluctant to put their line of breeding under the microscope,” states Dr. Osborne, “but Sabrina has done so without trepidation, realizing the benefit not only for her own breeding program but for the breed as a whole.”
Dr. Osborn has seen a benefit to her practice as well. The study has given her clients with Golden Retrievers access to subsidized comprehensive wellness screenings in exchange for a small time commitment.
“The real benefit to these owners will be realized as the participating dogs grow older, and we are able to identify and treat ailments that otherwise would go undetected,” she says.
Dr. Osborn encourages any veterinarian to take on the challenge of participation and to actively recruit age-appropriate Golden Retriever patients into the study.
Morris Animal Foundation would like to recognize the entire clinic staff, Sabrina Prim and her Golden Retrievers Jane, Lucy and Victoria for their contributions to the study. With four study participants, Greens Fork Animal Hospital is currently tied as top performer in the Midwest region.
